“You shall put the mercy seat on top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the Testimony that I will give you.  And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim which are on the ark of the Testimony, about everything which I will give you in commandment to the children of Israel.” (Ex. 25:21-22)

God is now speaking to His people through His Son Jesus Christ (Heb. 1:1-2).

Symbolism  of  the  Ark  of  the Covenant
The Ark of the Covenant is made of Acacia Wood and covered with pure gold (Ex. 25:10-11)

Pure gold symbolizes Jesus Christ’s Divinity

Acacia Wood symbolizes Jesus Christ’s Humanity

On the Day of Atonement the blood of the sacrifice is sprinkled on the mercy seat above the Ark of the Covenant (Lev. 16:14).

“How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?” (Heb. 9:14)

The  Ark  of  the  Covenant  shows
God’s  Will  for  His  Servants

The mercy seat is on top of the Ark with two cherubim at the ends.

“The cherubim spread out their wings above, and covered the mercy seat with their wings.  They face one another; the faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat.”   (Ex. 37:9)

Symbolism  of  the  Cherubim

Angels are fellow servants with God’s ministers (Rev. 19:10).
“The faces of the cherubim were toward the mercy seat.”
God wants His ministers to always preach God’s mercy through the sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 2:2).
Cherubim “guard the way to the tree of life” (Gen. 3:24).  Ministers of God must guard and protect the truth of God’s salvation.
The cherubim“face one another”and“spread out their wings above. Ministers of God should reach out to one another and pray for one another.

With their faces looking toward the mercy seat the cherubim bow to one another. Ministers should respect one another.

God met and spoke with Moses “from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubim” (Ex. 25:22).  God’s presence will be with ministers that do His will.

Only  the  Priests  can  carry
the  Ark  of  the  Covenant

“And when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the furnishings of the sanctuary, when the camp is set to go, then the sons of Kohath shall come to carry them; but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. . .” (Num. 4:15)

Children of Israel must follow the

Ark of the Covenant (Josh. 3:1-3)

1  Then Joshua rose early in the morning; and they set out from Acacia Grove and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and lodged there before they crossed over.
2  So it was, after three days, that the officers went through the camp;
3  and they commanded the people, saying, "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.
Christians must follow the Lord
Jesus Christ and His Teachings

Matthew 太 7:21 "Not everyone who says to Me, "Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.”

John 約 14:15 If you love me keep My commandments
John 約 14:23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

8:31  Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.

12 Priests, one from each Tribe,
carried the  Ark of the Covenant
over the Jordan River

11 Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over before you into the Jordan.

12 Now therefore, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man from every tribe.
13 And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off, the waters that come down from upstream, and they shall stand as a heap.“ (Josh. 3:11-13)

Carrying the Ark of the Covenant  crossing the
Jordan has great teachings for the Church

When the feet of the 12 priests touched the water God opened the way for the Children of Israel to cross the Jordan river.

The Lord Jesus Christ washed the feet of His 12 disciples to sanctify them, and also so that they can have a part with Him.

Children of Israel captured Jericho by
marching with the Ark of the Covenant

The army of Israel “shall march around the city” six days, “and seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams horns before the ark. . .” (Jos. 6:1-4)

On the seventh day “the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.” (Jos. 6:20)

Israel lost to the Philistines because
they trusted the Ark of the Covenant

Israel was defeated by the Philistines and the elders said, “Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand  of our enemies.” (1 Sam. 4:1-5)
The Philistines still defeated Israel badly, and not only killed 30,000 Israeli soldiers but also captured the Ark of the Covenant and brought it back to their pagan temple in Ashdod (1 Sam.1撒上 4:10; 5:1-2)
Uzza  died  when  he  touched
the  Ark  of  the  Covenant

King David carried the Ark of God on a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart. . . . And when they came to Chidon’s threshing floor, Uzza put out his hand to hold the ark, for the oxen stumble.  Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against Uzza, and He struck him because he put his hand to the ark; and he died there before God.” (1 Chron. 13:6-10)
King David corrected his mistake
and brought the Ark to Jerusalem

“David was afraid of God that day, saying ‘How can I bring the ark of God to me?” (1 Chron. 13:12)
“Then David said, ‘No one may carry the ark of God but the Levites, for the LORD has chosen them to carry the ark of God and to minister before Him forever.”              (1 Chron. 15:2 rf. Deut. 10:8)

“So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it.  Then they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.” (1 Chron. 16:1)
Lessons  from  the  Ark  of  the  Covenant

The elders of Israel wrongly thought the Ark of the Covenant “may save us from the hand  of our enemies.”  They should trust in YAHWEH God to save them, and not the box.

Uzza had the good intention to save the Ark of the Covenant when the oxen stumbled, but everyone in Israel had been warned not to touch it lest they die.
The Ark of the Covenant is only a symbol of the Lord Jesus Christ.  We cannot idolize the box.
Where  is  the  Ark  of  the  Covenant?

In 586 BC the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem and “he carried out from there all the treasures of the house of the LORD.”
(2 Kgs. 24:10-13)
It is unclear whether or not Nebuchadnezzar also carried the Ark of the Covenant away with him to Babylon.
After the 70 years captivity the Jews returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple.  There is no mention of the Ark of the Covenant.
Ark  of  the  Covenant  will  be  Forgotten

Jeremiah prophesied: "Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land in those days," says the LORD, "that they will say no more, "The ark of the covenant of the LORD.' It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore.     (Jer. 3:16).

God provides the New Covenant
“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. (Heb. 8:10)
“In that He says, ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete.  Now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.” (Heb. 8:13)
The Ark of the Covenant is only “a shadow of things to things to come, but the substance is of Christ.” (Col. 2:17)
Apostle  John’s  Vision  of  the
Ark  of  the  Covenant  in  Heaven

“Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the Ark of His Covenant was seen in His temple.  And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and a great hail.” (Rev. 11:19)
